Mr. Baldwin was born in Selma, Alabama in 1959. He lived with his father, mother, and five siblings. He could recall his father leaving the house and sometimes never to return for days or weeks. Baldwin is really not sure. For the future race relations in our black community, parents have got to do better with raising their kids at home. They must instill family values and give the kids a reason to want and do better. Mr. Baldwin noted, that there are a lot of pitfalls throughout life but you must stay focused. The family is important and the elder generation must show the new generation the importance of being involved. A nice home is attainable but you must know the meaning of working hard.
Mr. Baldwin believes that sports can be used as an aid in helping young black kids to get out of poverty. He said sports saved him. He was hoping to go to college on a basketball scholarship. However, his plans changed for the better after speaking with a Navy recruiter at the high school. The recruiter told Mr. Baldwin that he could make money and play basketball as the soldier.
