Community Language Learning By Charles A. Learner
Community Language Learning (CLL) is the name of a method developed by Charles A. Curran and his associates. Curran was a specialist in counseling and a professor of psychology at Loyola University, Chicago. His application of psychological counseling techniques to learning is known as Counseling-Learning. Community Language Learning represents the use of Counseling-Learning theory to teach languages.
Context of the lesson and the class
I have been watching a video entitled Community Language Learning who explained by Bonnie Mennell. In this video, the teacher thought a college student. Learning is not viewed as an individual accomplishment but as something that is achieved collaboratively. Learners are expected to listen attentively to the teacher, to freely provide meanings they wish to express, to repeat target utterances without hesitation, to support fellow members of the community, to report deep inner feelings and frustrations as well as joy and pleasure, and to become counselors to other learners. In addition, retention is thought to be enhanced when learners respond physically. The teacher’s commands do increase in complexity but it is important that she not move too quickly. Students should feel successful as feelings of success and low anxiety facilitate learning. Also, when the students do make an error, correction should be carried out in a non­threatening manner, perhaps by just repeating the command, and giving students an opportunity to self correct.
From time to time the teacher changes the order in which she issues commands so students do not memorize fixed routines. She also gives commands which combine previous imperatives in unexpected ways as students need to understand more than the commands used in the training.     As a preceptor, it is important to integrate the learning theories into practice, to develop student’s cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains based on Bloom’s taxonomy (Bloom, 1956). In this stage, different theories were involved, such as cognitive learning theory, behavioral learning theory and social learning theory. Cognitive learning theory focuses on the thought processes and learning is viewed as the acquisition of new information (Goldstein, Naglieri & Devries, 2011). The individual learns by listening, watching, touching, reading, or experiencing and then processing and memorizing the information (Schunk, 2010). However, behavioral learning theory learn though a continual process of stimulating and reinforcing a desired response, eventually the behavior is changed to match the desired response (Bower &Hilgard, 1981).     Unfortunately, this mindset that students should “just know” what is expected of them has not served teachers or students well. Teachers must look at student acquisition of desired behaviors just as they approach the learning of academic behaviors. Only through direct instruction can educators be certain that students will learn and master desired behaviors and expectations in the classroom.
