Mid-Grade Learning Continuum (MLC) 2015 Common Core AC100 Across Cultures
Advance Sheet for Lesson AC131 Cultural Considerations of Negotiation
1. SCOPE
a. This four hour lesson is intended for Army Leaders on the subject of cultural considerations of negotiation for conflict resolution. The lessons learned from Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) require that Soldiers at all levels of command participate as U.S. Military Representatives in meetings and negotiations with coalition partners, local leaders, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other U.S. government agencies (OGAs).
b. This instruction discusses negotiation processes and concepts and their applicability to current missions. The latter part of the training is dedicated to discussing the fundamentals of Interest-Based Negotiation (IBN) and how to integrate cultural consideration into the process. This training demonstrates how culture knowledge can be applied and evolves into a mission enabler. Applying the knowledge that students acquired in Cross-Cultural Skill Building (AC 121) will enhance their negotiating abilities.
c. The goal and purpose of this block is to instill in students the confidence (1) that they can identify the negotiation processes and styles and (2) that every Soldier can communicate and negotiate with individuals from other cultures to build rapport and facilitate the accomplishment of their mission.
2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
