Community Oriented Policing
Public safety is normally defined as different organizations that would include: emergency management agencies, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, rescue squads, and emergency medical services (EMS). The public safety agency I will be speaking about today is the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS). “COPPS is an organization, wide policing philosophy and management approach that promotes community, government, police partnerships and proactive problem solving to reduce jurisdiction’s crime and social disorder” (Rainey, 2012). With this organization it requires clear focus, a strong willpower to carry through with the essential distribution of time and resources, and the constant support of nominated and chosen officials.

The component of community partnership in Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) is that the “collaborative partnerships between the law enforcement agency and the individuals and organizations they serve to develop solutions to problems and increase trust in police” (Community Policing Defined, 2012). The second component in Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) is the organizational transformation which is “the alignment of organizational management, structure, personnel, and information systems to support community partnerships and proactive problem solving” (Community Policing Defined, 2012). Lastly, the problem solving component for the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) would be described as “the process of engaging in the proactive and systematic examination of identified problems to develop and evaluate effective responses” (Community Policing Defined, 2012). Compared to the traditional policing it services is an “incident-driven style, handling each incident as if it had neither a past nor future related to other BART issues or incidents” (Rainey, …show more content…
While COPPS is described as a taking the initiative and preventive; it works to recognize and address the fundamental causes of crime before crime occurs. The benefits of “COPPS produces the following benefits to BART: effective use of the entire BART transit system’s talent and resources to help solve problems, positive, productive relationships between the Police and commuters, reduced levels of crime and social disorders, greater job satisfaction for law-enforcement personnel, and improved quality of life for commuters” (Rainey, 2012). I have to say that the Community Oriented policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) other than the traditional policing due to it is a lot more easier to handle, it involves the community and it cost a lot less.
