Estée Lauder Companies is a leading manufacturer of prestige skincare, makeup, fragrance and hair care products. The company was founded in 1946 by Mrs. Estée Lauder, with only 4 cosmetic products and unlimited dreams. 66 Years later and with estimated sales of $8.8 billion per annum, it has a 29 strong brand portfolio (24 of which are sold in most countries) and is sold in over 150 countries. The company went public in 1995 but is still majority family owned, still controlling 70% of the voting shares. The organisation operates on a divisional structure, also called a product structure (Harold Leavitt, cited in Strategic Management of health care organisations, p385), clearly defining the reporting hierarchy. This form of structure is used to effectively control, coordinate and motive employee groups effectively as the organisation operate several different product brands under a global umbrella.
