He grows up in the castle under the tutelage of the scholar Pangloss. Candide falls in love with the baron’s beautiful daughter Cunegonde. It is about a man under the name of Ivan Ilyich, an accomplished and respectable man. It begins with his colleagues and “friends” in a private room, finding out in the newspapers obituary that Ivan has passed away. It is at this point in the story that you have sympathy for Ivan Ilyich, and are appalled at how they react. Ivan appears to have everything, a respectable position in society, a presentable family, and the appearance of wealth. He sees life as a perfect one that he himself has created. His only motivation is his desire to appear wealthy and fit in with the wealthiest of society. To summarize, it is about a man who thinks that with all these superficial life achievements, creates it an illusion of a perfect life. It does not defeat the fact that he has remained unloved and disregarded in his short lifespan.
