Hero and Claudio have a rocky relationship, in which its problems are what give the tragedy of the play, but they are in fact able to save it towards the end.
In Act 1, Scene 1, Claudio says, “In mine eye she is the sweetest lady that ever I looked / on.” (Shakespeare). Claudio really did love Hero, he even says that she is the sweetest lady in the talk with Benedick, he also says how much he adores her. Fights happen in every relationship, there cannot be any happy perfect relationships that do not fight, fighting comes with each relationship. The two had a quarrel, they were mad, but when he found out Hero passed he was heartbroken. “Now, unto thy bones goodnight./ Yearly will I do this rite.” (Shakespeare 23-24, Act 5, Scene 3). Claudio says to Leonato that every year he will come and do this again if that does not show love nothing does. He is there for forgiveness, he was wrong, he should have talked to her about it. Now even though he will never see her again, he hopes to do this and gain her forgiveness, because he still loves her. This is why Claudio and Hero are in fact in
love.
Beatrice and Benedick are only in love because another character told them that the other loved them. That is not love, they can not just say ‘oh they love me? Well okay, love them too!’ They have to earn love not just be given it on a silver platter. “By my troth, it is no / addition to her wit nor no great argument of her / folly, for I will be horribly in love with her.” (Shakespeare 222-224, Act 2, Scene 3). Benedick literally says that he will ‘be’ horribly in love with her, not that he is but will be. In Act 1 he talks about how much he hates her but all of a sudden he loves her because Don Pedro and Claudio say so. That is not love, but rather fake love he believes he loves her but does not, which again is not love. The same goes for Beatrice, “And, Benedick, love on. I will requite thee…” (Shakespeare 111, Act 3, Scene 1). After she hears that Benedick ‘loves’ her from Hero and Ursula she basically says okay and that she apparently loves him too. There is no real love between them, they only ‘love on’ because someone else says that they do. They don’t go by the heart, but by others opinions. In Act 5, Scene 4 Benedick says, “Then you do not love me?” (Shakespeare). Than Beatrice says, “No, truly, but in a friendly recompense.” (Shakespeare 83, Act 5, Scene 4). Beatrice states that she doesn't love Benedick. This is not their love but rather their friends and minds manipulating them to see something that was not there. Beatrice and Benedick are not in love, Hero and Claudio are.
In Conclusion, love is a key role in the play Much Ado About Nothing, with one couple more in love than the other, that couple is Hero and Claudio. Benedick and Beatrice have a fake love, in which they think they are in love but they are not. They go off more based on what people say than what they think. Hero and Claudio truly love each other, they had a rough start but have been able to push through and begin the rest of their lives. As the great William Shakespeare once said, “The course of true love never did run smooth.”
