‘In Much Ado,deception is used to both destroy relationships and unite lovers.How is deception used in this play and what is the impact?’
The Shakespearean play,’Much Ado About Nothing’,is the famous-known comedy,which is based in the Elizabethan era; when women were shameful for losing their virginity before marriage and men were teased with the names ‘cuckolds’,for having an disloyal wife,that slept around with a large sum of men.The play was created by well-known
British playwright/poet, William Shakespeare,who began to show his plays on the London stage in 1592.He started poetry in 1953. In ‘Much Ado About Nothing’,the play focuses mainly on two inseparable lovers,Claudio and Hero,and the two spiteful enemies that truly desire each other deep down; Beatrice and Benedick.
Deception is used by Shakespeare to demostrate a ‘merry war’ between Beatrice and
Benedick.An oxymoron ,’merry war’ is used to describe the witty banter and nasty comments between Beatrice and Benedick.The oxymoron allows us to see that Beatrice and Benedick have a hateful approach towards each other however,their ‘banter’ distracts them from truly hating each other. The nasty remarks towards each other, shows their hate for each other. On Act 1,Scene 1,Page 6 ; You can tell Beatrice and
Benedick’s hate for each other when Beatrice says to Benedick,”A bird of my tongue is better than a beast of yours” Benedick sends back a sharp and rude remark back by saying ,”I would,my horse,had the speed of your tongue and so good a continuer.”
Analysing the quotations, helps us recognize that Benedick and Beatrice remarks show us that they dislike each others presence and also,appearance, due to Benedick snapping back to Beatrice by calling her ‘my horse’.Beatrice and Benedick’s language shows their closeness,even when they argue because they twist each other’s words.
