Christmas: American Culture vs Christians
Santa. Jesus. Red and green. Gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Xmas. Christmas. American culture and Christians share some similarities of timing, dinner and being with family members. But they have different reasons on how they celebrate, why they celebrate, and the majority of songs shared.

The church body congregates on December 25th. Worship on high. Unlike American culture, Christians celebrate Christmas because of Jesus’ birthday. A birthday cake for Jesus follows a large dinner. Families gather to not only celebrate His birthday, they also gather to be with one another. Self-less acts of kindness are well-known among the Christian community. Some families go to food pantries and serve the homeless/poor. While others help an elderly neighbor shovel snow or go to the grocery store. During December, my church acquires a list of the homebound elderly. Then we go from nursing homes to personal homes and would sing praises to Jesus and common Christmas carols. We also sign up for Rainbow Table, which is serving the poor and homeless meals every Tuesday and Thursday. Churches, including my own, have a Christmas play put on by the junior youth as a way to educate the younger generations about why we celebrate Christmas. My family sat around the Christmas tree while my grandmother would read the story of Jesus’ birth and then the passage of Jesus giving his life for our sins. As Christianity spread through the Western world, it rarely followed a linear path: different pockets of faith and doctrine were developed by a variety of peoples in an even greater variety of locales. Nowhere is this more evident than in Roman Britain and the era of Anglo-Saxon migrations. In five centuries, English religious culture transformed from one of pagan worship to that of leadership in the Christian world. Controversies included more than merely pagan-Christian dynamics; the Christians were greatly divided, and Christian efforts went through many ebbs before becoming firmly established. One must evaluate the development of both Rome and England to gain an adequate understanding of early English Christianity.…

"The neighbors already have their lights up, but I think we'll be able to out do them this year with all the new lights I bought at Wal-Mart." You could probably hear a husband saying this to his wife anywhere in the U.S. around Christmas time. Some neighborhoods even have real competitions, where awards are given out for the best Christmas light decorations. It seems a big hit lately are these bigger than life size snowmen, Santas, or other figures that inflate and are put out on the front lawn. Having a huge Christmas tree decorated in an over the top fashion has also become important. Although I doubt Jesus cares who's decorations are better.…

Whatever you believe , Christmas (religious, cultural, or none), it is a purely human invention. Even if it really is based on the actual birth of the actual son of god, the holiday itself is still a human invention. It's a holiday that people made, which means that people are free to do with it what they like. I do get annoyed at religious people who insist that the "true" meaning of Christmas involves a rather silly and implausible story, much of which was clearly "borrowed" from previous cultures and traditions. What's annoying to me is people telling other people what Christmas should be. I just think that's rude.…
