Steve Earle wrote A Death in Texas, and George Orwell wrote A Hanging. Both authors set a indignant tone in their short stories, and also in comparison they are very much against the death penalty. One thing that differs between the two stories is how the prisoners lived, and how they were treated.
To begin with , Steve Earle and George Orwell, both wrote their novel with an indignant tone. When Steve Earle writes,” Our criminal justice system isn’t known for rehabilitation”, this makes Earle sound angry about the injustice in our Prisons. Orwell paints a picture of a gloomy, dirty and a bleak prison. He also talks about how skinny and frail the prisoners look. A row of sheds fronted with double bars, like small animal cages.” Orwell also writes,” Each cell measured about ten feet by ten and was quiet bare within except for a plank bed and a pot for drinking water.” The way he describes the jail cell sounds dirty and not fit for any human being to live in. Then he discusses the prisoner, saying, “He was a Hindu, a puny wisp of a man, with a shaven head and vague liquid eyes.” That makes the prisoner sound like he was being neglected, and shows how the author felt sorry for him. Steve Earle paints a picture of a healthy happy prisoner who he was able to see transform into a different person. “I watched this transformation in the letters that I received. There is no doubt in my mind that Jonathon Nobles that sat on the other side of the glass from me in September of 1998 is a different man than the one that the state of Texas sentenced to die almost twelve years ago.” Earle also states that John Nobles was treated with dignity and respect by everyone that he encountered. I believe that it’s more likely that he has earned the genuine respect of everyone at Ellis.” It is sad how one prisoner was treated with dignity and the other was treated like an animal.
