Compare And Contrast Disney And Destino

Worldwide, films, books, paintings, statues and lyrics all represent a form of art in which people can relate to. Each piece of art expresses its own message in its own unique ways. In the short film Destino by Salvador Dali and Walt Disney, one theme that is expressed is becoming a new self. The new self-theme is also shown in the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Each work of art has a storyline of growth from old to new and vulnerable to strong. Even though both stories show change from an old beginning to a new beginning, is change a good thing?
Stories start with a beginning. Many activities or hobbies that are new to people start off as a struggle, simply because they aren’t used to it. In Destino, the woman is climbing and running
up a hill to go and try new things at the top of it. All of a sudden, her dress gets caught on an eye. Since this was the woman’s first time trying new things, she failed by falling to the ground. She was embarrassed that she failed, so she slipped into a shell, naked and afraid. The shell represents her hiding spot from everyone and everything. In this shell, she is hiding from the world which shows vulnerability. The woman’s failure led her to bigger and better things, mainly because she learned from her mistakes and what she did wrong. Now, if the woman ever makes a mistake, she won’t hide. Likewise to Destino, Katniss in The Hunger Games starts off her journey vulnerable as well. When Katniss entered “The Games”, she didn’t know what to do. Her first instinct was to find a place she knows best: the woods. Out of nervousness and the fear of dying, she disguises herself high up in a tree; this tree illustrates Katniss’s hiding spot and shows her vulnerability. Katniss began to think that she might have made a mistake of volunteering to be in the “Hunger Games.” After hiding in the woods, Katniss came out and began to fight. The two stories show that making mistakes is a good thing, not a bad thing. The characters learned that they shouldn’t hide from their mistakes, and just learn from them because they only make them stronger.
Sometimes, doing the right thing has to be learned.
Throughout Destino, the woman begins to flourish into a new person. A dandelion forms around the woman’s head and then pieces of it begin to break off. The pieces of the flower represent her passion for helping others; they go off and provide assistance and nurture. The woman didn’t start off with the flower, but as time went on, she began to realize what is the right and wrong thing to do. The woman noticed that doing the right thing will lead her to a bigger and better life, so the woman decided to provide care and kindness to people around her. Similar to the woman, Katniss in the Hunger Games reflects her caring nature as well. During the games, Katniss's opponents “fend” for themselves, except for Katniss. Instead of killing the ones that walk through her path, she finds a young girl named Rue who reminds her of her sister. Katniss befriends Rue and protects her like she is her sister. Sadly, Rue gets killed. Katniss then puts her own life in danger by making Rue a grave. The grave is made out of hundreds of hand-picked flowers that she puts around Rue’s body. The flowers represent Katniss’s empathy for others and her ability to handle tough situations. At the beginning of “The Games,” Katniss did not know what to do. As time passed throughout “The Games,” she changed her mindset from hiding to taking care of her friend. Katniss’s change in mindset made her become a more caring girl, and Rue’s death caused Katniss to
learn how to handle situations. Destino and The Hunger Games share the aspect of each woman growing into a stronger version of themselves.
Strength is a characteristic shared by both characters.
The woman in Destino continues her journey of growth throughout the entire film. Near the end of the film, when her voyage comes to a halt, she transforms into a bell. The bell represents her strength and courage. When she becomes the bell, it shows her becoming a new, improved individual. The woman didn’t choose to go on this journey, but her journey changed her by providing her with her strength and courage to continue on. In The Hunger Games, once Katniss, along with her fellow partner from her district, defeat all of their opponents, she is crowned the victor. The crown she is given represents her strength and the obstacles she had to overcome to get to that point. Katniss obviously didn’t want to be in “The Games”, but she didn’t have a choice. She was almost forced into it, but her journey through “The Games” reflect how she transformed into a new person and gained strength and courage. Both characters started off isolated from the world and their true being until they were forced into interactions that made them the strong, confident self they grew to
become.
Progress is impossible without change. Each piece of art portrays the main character changing from old to new, or becoming strong and having courage. In Destino and The Hunger Games, change is shown as a definite positive, as the characters former identities were vulnerable and isolated, but through their passages they changed and grew as individuals and discovered who they were: strong, confident women. The journeys of the women share many similarities that correspond to one another and express the meaning of how someone can discover a new beginning, which is through change.
