Introduction Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon and Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver are two book that are set to become major motion pictures. In all my years as a 14-year old, I have learned the book tends to be better than the movie, which is why I read these books. That was one of the best decisions I have made. These books guide the reader through love and trouble each character experiences. Madeleine Whittier has been alone her whole life, only interacting with her mom and her nurse, Carla, because she has a rare disease, SCID, which made her allergic to the world. When a new family moves in next door, she gets thrown into a world of adventure and love she hadn’t known before. Oliver ‘olly’ is the new boy next door, and after having a very intricate email relationship, they finally meet in person. Olly shows Maddy things she’s never seen before, gives her emotions she’s never felt before. Through that relationship, she goes with him to Hawaii, in a kind of YOLO moment. In Hawaii, she finally gets to experience things she has wanted to experience all her life. While there, her heart stops, but starts again, and by that time, her mother has brought her back home. Maddy is prohibited from interacting with Olly, and during this time, Olly moves away with his mom and sister, leaving their temperamental, abusive father behind. In a major plot twist, she discovers from multiple doctors that she never had SCID. Her mom had crafted this lie, after her husband and son died to keep Maddy close to home. This book is loaded with emotion and pain, but the thing is, it’s real pain. There are kids going through these kinds of things everyday. The fact that Oliver was able to think up such a world where you could relive your last day is amazing, and she was able to introduce the tragedies of humans to the reader in such a way it left them thinking for days. Lauren Oliver showed me that all my actions have consequences, and no act is little. Our actions speak volumes, and that was one of the most important lessons learned from this
