Compare And Contrast Goblin Market And The Lady Of Shalott
Two poems that have a large comparison with gender roles would “Goblin Market” and “The Lady of Shalott”. These two pieces of literature were written in different times but both try to get across the same message. Both poems are calling out for females positions in the world. The authors for these poems were trying to point out that women do not need men to function in society. However this is a comparison between the to poems but a contrast would be that the style of these pieces flow in opposite directions. “Goblin Market” adds more of a positive vibe to the poem and uses more metaphorical situations to get the message across. While “The Lady of Shalott” has some more realistic circumstances while getting to the point of the poem. The

    “Goblin Market” alludes to the biblical story of the forbidden fruit and the resulting Fall due to failure in resisting that fruit. “The fruit that tempts Laura, however, clearly is not from the tree of knowledge but from the orchard of sensual delights (1489).” We are introduced to a plethora of these sensual delights and Laura and Lizzie’s first lure into temptation within the first 115 lines.     One particular book that contains the topic of sexism embedded inside is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In the novel, Scout who is a tomboy, is constantly reminded to be a lady (Lee 50), as if being a lady means to be proper. Scout is expected to act like a lady, which means that she cannot go around playing outside with the other kids in the neighborhood. Later on in the book, without even realizing it, Atticus, who is a lawyer and Scout’s father, makes a remark about the ladies of Maycomb. Atticus says to Scout, “‘I guess it’s to protect our frail ladies from sordid cases like Tom’s’”(Lee 296). He implies that women are not strong enough to serve on the jury and that they need to be protected from the harsh truths found in court. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is another novel that uses gender inequality to get a point across to readers. Curley’s wife, who has been called a tart numerous times, is the only woman on the ranch. She has no one to talk to besides Curley, who is an aggressive man that doesn’t understand her.
