In Lady Macbeth's soliloquy, Act 1 Scene 5, she is depicted as being very evil especially when she speaks the words “fill me from the crown to the toe top with direst cruelty”, she desires to be able to do anything it takes to make her husband king. However, the first clue to whether Lady Macbeth is really evil or not, isn't directly to do with Lady Macbeth more so the setting and the colours and lighting. In Goold’s (2010) adaptation in Act 1 Scene 4 Lady Macbeth is reading the letter from Macbeth the colors are very monotone with mostly black and white. One scene where Lady Macbeth is the victim is Act 5 scene 1 in which she tries to wash the blood from her hands and get rid of the amounts of guilt she is feeling. The guilt of her and her husband's actions become to much and drives her to killing herself. Lady Macbeth could not wash the blood from her hands and can not handle the guilt she knows this as she said “Here's the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. This shows that she did feel guilty and therefore sorry for what she had done. This scene begs the Question does a true villain feel guilt? Based on this scene alone she is not the villain but the the victim who only wanted what was best for her
