In the half-cast poem by John starts he starts apologizing to the reader for being half-cast, which is very ironic because what he is trying to explain in his poem is how angry and frustrated with the term half-cast. He finds it very disrespectful and with nonsense when people uses this term to describe him. When he talks about “I half-caste human being cast half-a-shadow but yu must come back tomorrow wid de whole of yu eye an de whole of yu ear an de whole of yu mind” is saying that he feels that when people use this term is like saying he doesn’t exist, that being half-caste is nothing human or pure, John invites the readers to be open minded and change the way people see him. written by begins Grace Nichols he starts his poem by giving an image of a man who wakes up with the sound of nature of an island and find it comfortable, familiar and smooth “to the sound of blue surf in his head the steady breaking and wombing”. If you compare the beginnings of this poem you can see that the authors start with how they feel, which is disappointment or anger, when the reality dose not approve their dreams of what they want, these two emotions have a negative impact in their surroundings, making them sad or angry.
In the half-cast there’s anger in the poem when he demands and explanation from the reader why is it bad to mix cultures, this is shown when he says “yu mean when Picasso mixed red and green is a half-caste canvas?” In this sentence he is saying that’s why is it bad to mix colours, when the outcome of combining different colours is better in this idea John wants to tell people that mixing cultures, religion and ideas will bring a much brighter result, if we put ourselves to the challenge and do different things by accepting other points of view from different people around the world, however in the island man Grace Nichols talks about how the man is familiar with the hot island, but feels weird when he returns from his visit “the sun surfacing defiantly from the east of his small emerald island he always comes back groggily groggily”, in the end of the poem the waves turn into pillows and the man wakes up in London, what both authors represent in here is that no matter where you are you will always feel exulted by the people in your surrounding or you will exclude yourself because you feel out of place, the background of the island man and the half-cast will follow them for the rest of their lives since it defines them for inside and outside.
The similarities that both authors use effectilvey to communicate their feelings are that in both texts they use imagery, in half-caste “when the moon begins to glow” it gives a perfect image of the moon and in the island man “a grey metallic soar to surge of wheels” this helps us visualize the immensity of the roa, this technique that the authors us is very effective because it helps the reader imagine what the writer see at that exact moment and creates a writer-reader connection.
In these poems there’s a lot of similarities, with the meaning but there are clearly a lot of differences between these two poems, one poem talks about exclusion of a person that is different and the other talks about people that moves from one place to another, leaving everything behind, and dreams of its native home, for instance in the half-caste John Agrad, he tells everyone how he is excluded from the society by being different, that his culture isn’t accepted by the people because he is different and feels insulted by the term they use to identify him which is half-castle, “I half-caste human being cast half-a-shadow but yu must come back tomorrow wid de whole of yu eye an de whole of yu ear an de whole of yu mind” john wants to change peoples opinions on what is the “pure race”.
In the other hand Grace Nichols in the island man he talks about a situation of a man that dreams of a place where he dose not longer live in it, but wants to be in there because it brings him peace, he feels that’s where he belong, but the reality hit him and shows him the he does not longer live in that place and find it tedious to live in London and addresses it as “another London day”. In one poem a man wants to fit in the new society and the other want’s to go back were he used to
live.
The similarities are that in both texts they use imagery, in half-caste “when the moon begins to glow” it gives a perfect image of the moon and in the island man “a grey metallic soar to surge of wheels” this helps us visualize the immensity of the roa, this technique that the authors us is very effective because it helps the reader imagine what the writer see at that exact moment and creates a writer-reader connection. Other similarity would be that both men in the stories have a difficult fitting in the society they are living in.
In conclusion both stories are similar in the way they are written, both of them transmit the same feeling of rejection of society, but are differently expressed in one story the author is aggressive and in the other is very calm, in one text the writers wants to convince the reader to change a point of view when the other wants to transmit a feeling of loneliness, these text are very different in this aspect but both are aiming towards a transmitting rejection.
