who is important to them, but they learn that it is they who are also important to others.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus takes a journey that makes him realize his importance to his wife. While Odysseus is on his journey people tell his wife, she has to marry another person. She says that she will not marry another person until she finishes making a quilt. In order to avoid marrying a new person she continuously sews and un sews her quilt so that she never finishes. Because of this continuous job that she does we can tell that she is still loyal to Odysseus. If Odysseus was not important to her then she would not do a job as hard and a delaying as this. Her not wanting to marry another man shows her loyalty to him and his importance to her. In another situation Penelope is holding Odysseus’s bow and arrow she “[sinks] down, holding the weapon on her knees, and drew her husband’s great bow out, and sobbed and bit her lip and let the salt tears flow” ( Homer and Robert Fitzgerald, book 21; line 16-18) Penelope is showing that though at this moment she is being forced to marry another man she will always remember Odysseus as her husband. This shows how Odysseus’s journey shows him that he is important to his wife. Based off what happens in the odyssey the reason for someone going on a journey is to not find out who is important to them but who they are important to.
The narrator also goes on a journey happens in the Poem “The Journey” by Mary Oliver.
The difference is that this poem is more of a journey within. In “The Journey” the writer talks about going away to get away from people that you do not care about. People need you but you do not need them . In the poem these people are asking the narrator to “Mend my life”( Mary Oliver 10). The narrator still moves on because these people are not important to him/her, as proved when the narrator says that he/she “didn’t stop” when asked to not leave. The narrator continues on their journey only keeping in mind people they care about, which in this poem is themselves. This goes with the statement that people go on journeys to discover who is important to them, but also that they are important to others because when the narrator starts to leave all of these people are asking for help which displays his/her importance to these people . In the end of the poem another part like this happens when the narrator talks about saving yourself they say that you are “determined to save the only life you could save”(35-36) The narrator is saying that a journey makes you save the only life you could save, this life is the narrator's own life. That life, is the life of whoever is important to you and who you are important to you. The narrator uses this Journey within to convey the thesis that people embark upon journeys to discover who is important to them, but they learn that it is they who are also
important to others .
Homer and Mary Oliver use details to convey how people who go on journey find not only to find out who is important to them but who they are important to.This is mostly represented when people avoid someone they are angry with because they feel bad at the time but when it comes down to it they will realize that without those people in their life they are unhappy and those people will feel the same way.
