Odysseus In Homer's Odyssey '
Level 1: What do the gods decide on when Poseidon is away for the fate of Odysseus?

Level 2: In Book VII (7), why do you think Athena wants to mask Odysseus’s identity from the palace of Alcinoos?

Level 2: Why doesn’t Odysseus accept/trust the help of the gods other than that of Athena?

Level 3: If you were Zeus, would you take Athena’s side and allow Odysseus to return home or would you take Poseidon’s side, OR would you mediate as Zeus did in the book and explain your thoughts. 1: Athena explains to the gods that Odysseus remains trapped on Calypso's Island and needs help, and the suitors plan to murder Telemachus. Zeus agrees that it is time for Odysseus to return home, but that it will not be easy. Zeus explains, "He shall build a raft, and a hard voyage he shall have, until twenty days he shall come to land on Scheria, the rich domain of our own

At the palace of Alcinoos, they pray to Poseidon. For the well being of Odysseus, she creates this mist to hide his heroic and godlike aura. Additionally, Odysseus himself does not expose his name to Alcinoos in Books 5-8. “A thick mist hid him from sight, as Athena did not wish any one to meet him and provoke him and ask him who he was” (81).
2: For twenty years he has been on the, dare I say, “naughty list” of the gods, especially Poseidon. According to Greek mythology, Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon are the main controlling gods. As Odysseus had greatly upset Poseidon, all of his sons and daughters have troubled Odysseus. But when Calypso said that Odysseus could leave he thought it was trap. “I am sure there is something else in your mind, goddess, and no kind of send-off for me, when you tell me to cross the great gulf of the sea on a raft” (65). In addition, when Ino wanted to give him the veil so that he would not drown, he was reluctant to utilize

“Do this, do that” that is all other gods tell me to do. They don’t even ask! They just command me because they think they are better than me! The think just because I have the same job as a mailman that I am not important, but I am also a GOD! I don’t even care about Odysseus. Calypso is better looking than Penelope. I would be happy in his situation, but no, Athena needs to intervene. She needs to free Odysseus so she can look like she is high and mighty. She just wants to suck up to Zeus, but I have to be the one to tell Calypso to let him go. I was forced into letting her go. If Zeus didn’t favor Athena so much I wouldn’t have had to. The gods have played their part altering the course of the hero’s voyage. Seemingly, in the epic harmony does not last long and challenges follow Odysseus like a plague. Calypso, the audience believes holds the last installment of the global journey, our hero has yet more battles ahead of him. In fact, the king of Ithaca wandered the Mediterranean and its coastal lands for 10 years before finally arriving home. As waves crash against the raft, “he was seen sailing the ocean”(284). The sea near the land of the Phaeacians is only one region Odysseus has been driven to. When Odysseus offers Zeus a prized Lamb’s thighbones, he refuses them, and Odysseus realizes his mistake. He states that “Zeus disdained my offering, destruction for my ships he had in store and death for those who sailed them.” He wanted absolutely nothing to do with him, which told Odysseus that he would have no guidance or protection from him; they would have to take the journey on alone. It was then that Odysseus knew that the voyage home would be difficult, and that he would have to prove himself by adhering to the god’s advice. The fact that Odysseus does not have Zeus on his side is extremely important, it means that Odysseus would have to prove himself by acting with restraint, the men’s lives depended on it. When Odysseus had a chance to return home with the remaining crew, he was still inclined to disobey the gods thinking that he could fight his way out of his destiny, something for which Circe berated him, saying, “Must you have battle in your heart forever? The bloody toil of combat? ...will you not yield to the immortal gods?” Odysseus is a fighter, and believes that he is above all, which shows that he still will not “yield”, or admit he’s not equally great. This trait is the root of the issues that arise in the epic tale, and causes the gods to be filled with disdain towards him. It is also the cause of the men’s demise, because of his arrogance, he ruins his chances of…

Odysseus was stranded on Calypso’s island and the lovely nymph held him captive. Seemingly no hope, and no way to get home. Athena summoned a God's meeting and “began, recalling Odysseus to their thoughts…” (5.5-6). Bringing the idea up in first place gave attention to his situation and a desire for help. Giving the truth to why he should go home was convincing enough for Zeus to tell his son to inform Calypso to let him free. Zeus also pled that “‘odysseus comes home- the exile must begin. No, on a lashed, makeshift raft and wrung with pains...he shall see his loved ones, reach his high-roofed house, his native land at last’” (5.33-46). Intentionally, but not directly, Athena gave Odysseus a plan to make it back home. Coming home would mean murdering the cold hearted suitors from his own house to regain his king status; Her influence was the reason he came home.…

Odyssey primarily deals with a world of immanent meaning; that is to say, divine presence is everywhere, and everything is subject to the will of the divine, or in the case of the Greeks, several godly figures. Nearly all of the instances in which Homer allows Odysseus to escape whatever situation he is in, is due to a combination of his own cunning and divine intervention. He makes a point of asserting the god’s continual presence in Odysseus’ responses to his adventures. Poseidon is seen to be pulling the majority of the strings that work against Odysseus, being the one to bestow the curse on him to wander for ten years (Odyssey 9. 584-96). However, there is a collection of gods and powerful god-like figures that make it possible for him to overcome Poseidon’s challenges; perhaps the most potent example of this is the instance upon which Calypso, who has fallen deeply in love with Odysseus and has persuaded him to stay with her, must set him free. Athena was able to persuade Zeus to send Hermes to Calypso, who is then told that she must let Odysseus go on his way (5. 108-28). Homer makes it abundantly clear…

    Odyssey Analysis

Adventure calls in Odysseus when Calypso lets him to leave her island and start his trip home. Calypso is Odysseus' temptress in the most blatant of ways as she makes it clear that Odysseus is the object of her desire. Calypso also directly stimulates Odysseus and rekindles his optimism for finding his way home. Initially, Odysseus refuses his call to adventure when he believes that Calypso is merely attempting to trick him into thinking he is free. Odysseus was so cunning that in an attempt to avoid Calypso's perceived entrapment, Odysseus fools himself into nearly missing his chance at escape. Odysseus then begins to construct a ship which acts as his threshold to freedom. Like a door, Odysseus' ship acts as a threshold by granting him access to an area that was, before, unreachable. Odysseus finds himself in the belly of the whale as he begins his sea voyage and hunkers down in his ship. The ship clearly represents the belly of the whale because a ship, like a whale, is large and is found in the sea. Athena acts as Odysseus' supernatural aid, not only by intervening on his behalf with the other gods but also by protecting him from the storm sent by Poseidon. Odysseus' road of trials is represented by the events spanning from Poseidon's storm to his forced retelling of his many adventures to the Phaeacian royal court. Each obstacle Odysseus faces further delays the continuation of his journey to Ithaca. Odysseus has his meeting with the goddess during his encounter with Ion. She spurs him on by delivering to him a shroud that would protect him from Poseidon's storm. Without this protection he would not have been able to reach the Phaeacians. The apotheosis of Odysseus occurs once he has finished telling his story to the Phaeacians. This is his apotheosis because until his full story is told the Phaeacians do not fully hail him as a hero. The boon that Odysseus carries with him on his "magic flight" back home is his story. The experiences of his many adventures…
