The civilizations of Mesopotamia and Ancient China both supported polytheistic religions, but the way they worshipped and the gods they believed in where different. Ancestor veneration was important to the Shang. If people did not respect their elders they believed that they would not be successful because they thought that success was based on whether or not their ancestors were happy. Mesopotamian religion believed that everything in the world was controlled by the gods. Each city had their own god they believed protected it. The Shang and Mesopotamia both believed heavily in worshipping the gods.
Mesopotamia had a collection of separate civilizations, for example the Sumerians and the Babylonians. China had more of an organized empire and had extensive bureaucracies to control it. The Shang government was a monarchy, the king being both lawmaker and judge. Early Mesopotamia was similar to a democracy, for example the Sumerians elected an assembly to run the government. Both Mesopotamia and Ancient China where run by dynasties.
During the Shang, farmers cultivated silkworms and made silk which became one of China’s main exports. Mesopotamia relied heavily on trade to obtain the good it’s needed. Written records were kept to record the trades. In Ancient China, the serfs and slaves did almost all the economic functions of the society. The main income for both Mesopotamia and the Shang was the harvest of their crops.
