Types
There are two main categories of birth control pills. The combination pill and the progestin only pill also known as the mini pill. The combination pill contains both synthetic oestrogen and progestin whereas the progestin only pill(minipill) only contains progestin. The combination pill is said to be more effective than the progestin pill. There are numerous different types of birth control pills. The pills are either a combination pill or a progestin only pill. Every pill is different. There are varying dosages and side affects caused by the pill. The most common brand of combination pills is the Yaz, Yasmin, Rigevidon,
Cilest and Microgynon. The progestin pills include Aizea, Cerazette, as well as Cerelle and many more. As seen in bar graph one in the presentation of data, an ultra low dose pillsuch as the Yaz has roughly twenty micrograms of oestrogen. A regular dose pill like the Yasmin has 30-35 micrograms of oestrogen and a high dose pill has anything above 35 micrograms of oestrogen. In this case Microgynon has 50 micrograms of oestrogen. How does The Birth Control Pill work?
The hormones inside these pills prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation. The mucus outlining the cervix is thickened thus making is difficult for the sperm to reach the egg. The endometrium is also thickened, thus making it difficult for an egg to attach itself to the uterus to grow.
Side affects
There are positive side affects and negative side affects of the oral contraceptive pills. Less painful periods, less bloating, as well as reduced premenstrual syndrome(PMS) are positive side affects of the pill. The negative side effects include weight gain, high blood pressure, breast tenderness, virginal discharge, and mood swings. The most detrimental effect of the pill is the increasing levels of the synthetic hormone oestrogen which has the potential to over stimulate breast cells causing mutations and cancer.
