It is impossible to know the exact reason for why people decide to undertake a mission. In these stories the characters all have their different reasons for why they undertook their missions. Rikki-Tikki fought cobras for the safety of his family. Katniss Everdeen took the place of her sister Prim in the hunger games to keep her safe. Farah Ahmedi climbed a mountain with her mom on her prosthetic leg to reach freedom. But they all had their different reasons for what they did. Rikki-Tikki and Katniss wanted to save their families while Farah wanted to live a better life.
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling is a very good story. The excerpt is about a Mongoose who is determined to kill the three snakes in the garden and save his family. The author claims that Rikki-tikki is a very curious and brave creature. It is also very hard to frighten Rikki-Tikki because mongoose’s are “eaten up from noose to tail with curiosity.” According to Kipling, Rikki-Tikki wound up in “the middle of a garden path” when a high summer flood washed him out of the burrow that he lived in. He met two cobras, Nag and Nagaina, he knew he had to kill them for the safety of his family and friends. The father in the story was almost killed by Nag in the bathtub but Rikki-Tikki came to the rescue and killed Nag first.

cobras and a snakeling, Katniss had to face 23 other people. According to Suzanne Collins, the author, Katniss put her name in the reaping 20 times for tesserae. She does this because she has to take care of her mom and sister. When she was twelve she had her name entered four times even though you only have to put one. “Once because I had to, and three times for tesserae for grain and oil for myself, Prim, and my mother.” (Collins) Prim somehow got picked to be in the hunger games but Katniss wouldn't let her, so she volunteered to be in her sister's place. Her sister Prim wanted Katniss to win so Katniss was determined to survive the game for her sister.
The Other Side of the Sky by Farah Ahmedi is a book about a girl named Farah.
She was in a land mine explosion so she had to get a prosthetic leg. Farah and her mother were Afghans that wanted to escape Pakistan. She was determined to cross the border even though Pakistan had already closed it to Refugees. One choice was to bribe the guards but sadly Farah and her mother had no money. Another choice was to go to the smugglers pass with the family that Farah had become friends with. The path was dark and steep but Farah had lots of energy. Farah discovered that there are people like Ghulam Ali and it gave her a sense of hope in
humanity.
Rikki-Tikki, Katniss, and Farah all pursued their own goals. Rikki-Tikki fought for his family even though it could have meant death. Katniss put her name in the reaping many times so she could bring food home to her family. Farah escaped Pakistan not by bribing the guards but by finding help from a man. Each of them were undertaking a mission to save a family, to survive desperate circumstances, and to live a better life. All three learned from their missions and passes their lessons along to the people that came after them. If everyone learned from them we would all do well.
