Compare And Contrast Romeo And Juliet Romantic Love
In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet are seen as having romantic love with each other. What romantic love is in the play is different to how some people view what their love is. Romantic love today is seen as being passionate, a strong love between people to the point where if anything were to happen you would be by that person’s side. In the play some parts of Romeo and Juliet’s love is seen as being focused on looks and isn't focused on the traits and characters of each other. When Romeo describes Juliet it usually isn’t anything about who she is, but it’s usually about how pretty she looks.
Romantic love is when two people love each other so much that they would be willing to do anything for the other
person. It is very passionate and loving. Romeo and Juliet profess their love many times during the play. Their love is romantic love but they seem to refer to each other’s looks as being qualities that the other loves about them. The night Romeo climbs over the wall to the Capulet’s backyard and watches Juliet from the ground, Romeo says that “the brightness of her cheek would shame those stars as daylight doth a lamp”(pg84). He also then says “her eyes in heaven would through airy region stream so bright that birds would sing and think it were not night”(pg84). Romeo is so deeply in love with the sight of Juliet that he keeps talking about her features. Today, many people fall in love at first sight. Then when they are dating everything is happy and bright and all you can think about is your significant other. My cousin, Bliss, actually saw her boyfriend in a park. He is in a combat unit in the military. Bliss never stops talking about him. She would talk about how handsome he is and how nice he is as a person. Romeo and Juliet were rushing things and wanted to get married fast. That is why Romeo was at Juliet’s house, Romeo wanted to talk about marriage plans. Bliss and her boyfriend are moving things along slightly faster than the normal couple, but that is because they want to have these milestones sooner than later. They want to have them sooner because he has to go back to Afghanistan and he may not make it back home. However, there is a majority of people who don’t get to have a relationship like this. Feel sad when they see others together. Then it also seems like Romeo and Juliet’s romantic love is based mainly on looks. That isn’t realistic today. People may have a crush based on looks but who they are as a person is what keeps someone truly interested in having a long, healthy relationship. On the contrary to just focusing on looks, Juliet does want this relationship to last. She tells Romeo in the same seem that they should take it a bit slower and make the relationship meaningful. Then when Romeo starts to swear that he truly loves Juliet, Juliet says “O swear not by the moon, th’ inconstant moon”(pg90). She basically tells Romeo that she doesn’t want him to swear on the moon since it changes every night, and she does want their love to be like that. She doesn’t want Romeo to one day be in love and then it all changes the next day. Juliet wants him to make sure he truly loves her and will stay that way through hard times. Since they are from rivaling families, she wants him to keep loving her even though their families may find out and forbid them from being with each other. People can see this love and scenario of forbidden lovers in many books and movies. In the 5th Wave, the planet is being taken over by aliens. The main character Cassie Sullivan falls in love with Evan Walker. Evan is one of the aliens that are taking over the planet. They are forbidden lovers because since these aliens are killing people, everyone thinks all these aliens are bad. So he is not accepted because of the species he is associated with. Cassie and Evan’s scenario is similar to Romeo and Juliet’s in the fact that they are forbidden. In the real world, some countries have arranged marriages, some of these people who are going to get married with someone they don’t like have someone who they really want to marry. Unfortunately, these people are not able to live a happy life with that person that makes them happy. In other cases, there are these two people who think they are madly in love but they push things too fast and they end up having a falling out. This is what Juliet wants to avoid but in the play, this does not happen. All in all, romantic love in the play and in real life is slightly different. Some cases prove that the love in the play could go well and not crash completely. Then in other cases this love in the play cannot actually last because of obstacles some of people have.
