The Back-to-Africa movement was widely supported by both White and Black population of America. At the same time, the US passed a legislation that captured runaway slaves have to be returned to their owners (Blackett, 2010). Therefore, Black population of the country also believed that freedom for them is possible only in a country that does not have US legislation and where they could run away to. The supporters of the colonization movement believed that they are helping people who used to be slaves to gain their freedom and improve lives. Moreover, they believed that they are helping African-American slaves to return to their motherland, and thus reconnect with their past and find their African routes.
