The short story “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty and the poem “The Man He Killed” by Thomas Hardy both share similarities and differences throughout the plot. The author stated how the plot was similar by saying, “Here and there through the city, machine guns and rifles broke the silence of the night, spasmodically, like dogs barking on lone farms. Republicans and Free Staters were waging civil war”(O’Flaherty 206). This quote is explaining how the main character is most likely in the middle of war and all he can hear is the sounds of guns throughout the city. “But ranged as infantry, And staring face to face, I shot at him as he at me, And killed him in his place.” This quote is explaining that the main character in the poem is in war and how he just killed his enemy. The plot was also different. The author stated, “On a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge, a Republican sniper lay watching”(O’Flaherty 206). And people should be peaceful and friendly so war doesn’t have to happen. War can bring an end to everyone’s lives if people don’t stop fighting in war. The short story “The Sniper” and the poem “The Man He Killed” show and explain how war can be painful. Also, how war can tear people apart and cause suffering. They show how war is not a fun thing to experience, and if the world wants less people to die then some people suggest that war is not the answer.
