This approach to health is crucial for studies as it widens the understanding. Dahlgren and Whitehead (1991) argue that there are layers of different concepts which impact health. They created this theory to interlink the individual’s relationship with the environment and their health. At the centre, they place the individual with their set of biological genes and surrounding them are modified influences on health. The first layer begins with personal choices which impact health such as smoking, socialisation and their home environment. The next layer contains the social and community aspect, which involves the support of the community in disadvantaged areas.
