The Irish Potato Famine and The Hispanic Migration are completely different things that happened at 2 different times, but there are some things that are similar. The push and pull factors of these 2 migrations are the environmental, social, and political reasons. These reasons are very important when it comes to leaving or going to a new country or place.
The environment of Mexico is very rough and very criminal. There is loads of crime in Mexico and it is an unsafe place for families who want a safe, stress free life. Mexico is always in danger of natural disasters; for example, the 1911 Michoacan earthquake and the Guerrero earthquake hit Mexico …show more content…
and the country suffered greatly. Another natural disaster that happened in Mexico was the tsunami in 1946 that hit the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico also has a scarcity of available water, which led to the current condition of the parched land and climate there. Ireland wasn’t so safe either because back then there wasn't any good medicine or good equipment so you could possibly die from a broken bone or even the smallest cut if it were to get infected. There was a massive famine going around in Ireland that had an enormous death count of over 2 million from starvation and other various diseases. Another environmental point is that in 1816 or “The year without a summer” there were heavy rains and freezing temperatures in Ireland caused the failure of wheat, oats, and potato crops. The Irish and Mexicans wanted to go to America for similar reasons. Mexicans wanted to go to America because they had an abundance of water and there were far less natural disasters. The Irish went to America to escape the natural disasters and to get fresh water to farm and grow their crops. They also needed to get out of Ireland because of the famous famine that killed most farmers crops.
Mexicans left because when Porifirio Diaz was the president of Mexico he confiscated ejidos to sell the land to large companies forcing small Mexican farmers to find new homes and jobs.
Porifirio started a revolutionary war in Mexico and he was one of the leaders of the counter-revolutionary forces. Porifirio was later exiled to France in 1911 after the war and died in France at the age of 84 in 1915. Another reason why Mexicans wanted to leave Mexico was because of the labor shortages caused by WW1 and WW2. As the war progressed, farmers were being asked to produce much more food with fewer and fewer workers. More and more young men were being drafted or enlisted in the military and the farm labor shortage quickly became severe. In 1790 people in Ireland wanted to leave because of the Anti-Catholic Penal Laws that were repealed in England. Penal Laws were laws passed against Roman Catholics in Britain and Ireland after the Reformation that penalized the practice of the Roman Catholic religion and imposed civil disabilities on Catholics. Another reason why people in Ireland wanted to leave for political reasons were because of the various acts passed in the 16th and 17th centuries that authorized fines and imprisonment for participating in Catholic worship with severe penalties, including death. People in Mexico and Ireland both wanted to get to the U.S. to get away from their evil and selfish government and go to the U.S. where they would have safety, stability and …show more content…
security. The U.S. was a safe and caring environment where anybody could get a do over with new new opportunities in a better environment.
In 2010, there were 19.8 million kids and 18.7 million of them had access to education in Mexico. So, there were still 1.1 million children who did not attend school even though in the Mexican Constitution, education is declared to be mandatory for everyone. According to the statistics of 2013, 53.3 million people live in poverty. Thus, there are many poor families who have difficulty in affording the necessary materials needed to provide for their families. In Mexico there aren't any good medical facilities and every doctor has around 1800 patients. In the 1800’s medicine and hospitals were extremely dreadful. The States had much better medical facilities and schooling systems that would provide an improved education. The U.S. also is a lot safer with a lower crime rate. In Ireland you could possibly die from a broken bone because there weren't many doctors back then. The famine left people homeless, poor, and hungry. Some people from Ireland took the opportunity and joined friends and family who had established new lives in the United States.
In Conclusion, Mexico's economic problems and government's seeming inability to provide its citizens with basic social services were terrible. Ireland had no government and people were dying and going poor from natural diseases and disasters like the Potato famine. Both Mexico wanted to go to America to have a better life. They wanted to get away from their government and the crime. They wanted to have better social services like hospitals and schools; And they wanted to be safer from natural disasters.
