• One phase of the Reconstruction era was the presidential era which started after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the man to take his place was Andrew Johnson. But as stated in the textbook “Johnson was a bitter racist” (411) he was against the idea of black equality. In May 1865 a lenient policy toward the South was designed to try and re-establish the southern state governments. The second phase was the Congressional phase. The congressional reconstruction started when republicans came into Congress. With the federal protection for voting, African Americans were able to vote because of that African Americans were at some point voted into office.

It also leads to a fair treatment of women in public service jobs; women were usually paid drastically lower than men.
