Compare And Contrast Tom And Gatsby

Gatsby a man Daisy is in love with but then there's her husband, Tom that she is scared to lose. Are Gatsby and Tom that much alike or is she just in it for the money? Daisy is all about money and she doesn’t care if it's old or new she just wants it. Daisy had a whim when Gatsby came back because she wanted Gatsby even though she was married to Tom. Daisy only married Tom for his money but she was in love with Gatsby.

Gatsby and Tom are alike in so many ways. Gatsby and Tom both have the idea of loving Daisy. They both were rich and lived in big houses. They are both friends with Nick. They have the thought that Daisy loves them both. “I want to know what Mr. Gatsby has to tell me.” “Your wife doesn’t love you,” said Gatsby. “She’s never
loved you. She loves me.” “You must be crazy!” exclaimed Tom automatically. Gatsby sprang to his feet, vivid with excitement. “She never loved you, do you hear?” he cried. “She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved any one except me!”(141) … “I did love him once - but I love you, too.”(142)
Tom And Gatsby are both similar characters but also very different in many ways.
Tom uses his money to only please himself he is very self centered. Where gatsby only uses his money to please Daisy and please others because he thinks that spending money on people will make them like him but truthfully people are just using him. Toms lives in East egg where the old money is “ Tom deferred that much to the sensibilities of those East Eggers who might be on the train.” Gatsby lives in West egg where the new money is “I lived at West Egg, the—well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them.” They are both rich but the difference is that Tom doesn't work he inherited his money and just spend it and gatsby did earn his money but he did it illegally. Gatsby is a party animal who throws parties he has a new up beat personality who has a huge mansion garishly decorated he dresses bright and catches people's eyes “It was Gatsby’s mansion. Or rather, as I didn’t know Mr. Gatsby it was a mansion inhabited by a gentleman of that name.” Where Tom is old fashioned and has a beautifully decorated house with reserved dressing
style. Daisy is attracted to Tom because of his money that has been in the family for generations“Why they came east I don't know. They had spent a year in France, for no particular reason, and then drifted here and there unrestfully wherever people played polo and were rich together.” (17). She falls in love with Tom and she gets married to him. Daisy starts to notice Toms affairs shortly after their honeymoon, they both know about each other's affairs but do not leave each(other because they are afraid of losing each other. Daisy and Gatsby were a thing back then Gatsby was a poor soldier. After Daisy married Tom Gatsby spends five years of earning money and building his life up. Then she realizes who Gatsby really is and decides that she can not be with him. Tom makes sure that Gatsby stay out of Daisy’s life forever by telling Wilson that it was Gatsby that hit and killed his wife. "I never loved him," she said, with perceptible reluctance.”
Daisy has always been in it for the money but when she met Gatsby she wanted more than just his money she wanted his love. Gatsby shouldn’t have left for 5 years then maybe things would have been different and he would have got the girl of his dreams. Gatsby took an excursion for five years and when he got back he wanted to forget the last five years and just continue life with Gatsby. Money isn’t everything it can’t fix all your problems and it just makes life way too easy and I know people dream on life just being easy but they really shouldn’t cause then you wouldn’t be where you are today. You wouldn’t know the meaning of working for things.
