High schools sport in the USA has a higher priority than sport in the UK. An example for this could be at Mission High School in Texas they get crowds of around 15,000 people to watch sport. However, in the UK crowds are far less and sport doesn’t get audiences of 15,000 in schools. I feel that Americans have an overall higher priority in sport as they have the Lombardian ethic which makes the games more interesting as there is a ‘win at all cost’ vibe.
In the USA they have the Lombardian ethic which means that they have to ‘win at all costs’ and that winning is everything. Whereas in the UK schools there is a more relaxed approach as they feel that taking part is more important than winning. Vince Lombardi was a NFL coach who said ‘winning isn’t everything, it is the only thing’ this is an example of the ethic they have and this is where the term Lombardianism came from. I feel that sport wouldn’t be so important to Americans in schools if they didn’t have this ethic. This is because the games may not be exiting for the supporters and if they are not trying to win it would be a little boring.
In the USA they have specialised coaches which only teach sport to the students whereas in the UK they have teachers who teach many subjects including sport. In the UK, schools hire a specialised teacher to come in for a set amount of time to teach the students a specific sport. In the USA they have a more professional approach as if a team losses too many matches, they will get rid of the coach and hire someone new. This isn’t the case in the UK due to the taking part is more important to winning ethic. I feel that the Americans have a better way of teaching as there is more of a drive to succeed. Also you can tell that the coach is interested in their sport as they do not have to teach other subjects and can solely focus on that.
