The researchers expected to find with this study that in early adulthood or college life mental health disorders affect different variables of the individual's life in college from alcohol and substance abuse, success in classes, success in future employment, and current and future relationships that the individual will be developing. These variables can be easily triggered by the stress of college classes and personal and social pressures.

They chose this because college students are more likely to find some type of internet and are normally great with technology, with this study very personal details would be looked at so if it was a face-to-face interview they would probably run into more social biases.
The researchers took into account of student who did not respond or nonresponse bias by sending a survey to those students and used the Stata 9.0 program to make adjustments to the weights.
Different measurement was used to measure the different mental health disorder of this study the main measurement used was the PHQ-4, that is a nine-item instrument, that can be used to measure depression and also anxiety. The PHQ-4 came from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders. Student would take a survey that would ask them to notice and log symptoms of the disorder for the past 2 weeks. The PHQ-4 helps break the participants off into different categorizes on the results of the survey (e.g., major depression, dysthymia, depression that is not specified, or neither).
The PHQ-4 used with anxiety ask the students to notice and log symptoms from the past 4 weeks. Then like depression, PHQ-4 broke them off into categorizes (e.g., panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, both, or …show more content…
65.8% or graduate students compared to 47.3% of undergraduate students. The students who did not respond, as previous mentioned, a survey was sent to them. There were 485 students that an email was sent to and only 263 actually took the survey. The students who responded to the first email where tested to have a more positive reading for depression then the students who took the nonresponsive survey. The PHQ showed that undergraduates had a more positive reading for depression/ anxiety then graduates students. There were more students in the categorize of other depression then they did for major depression. Students were also giving positive reading for generalized anxiety disorder then they did for panic disorder. 2.5% of undergraduates and 1.6% of graduates claimed to have suicidal thoughts from the 4 weeks. The plan of suicide was made by less than 1% from both undergrads and graduates from the past 4 weeks. 1 student from the study said they attempted suicide from the past 4 weeks. Students in the LGBT community were more likely to be depressed than students who are heterosexual. student who live with parents instead of on campus were more likely to think suicidal thoughts. Students who were struggling financial were more likely to test high for both depression and anxiety disorders and think suicidal thoughts. There were fewer
