Compare The Social And Corporate Governance Performance Of Rhodes Food Group And Pioneer Foods?
1. Introduction
The purpose of this project is to compare the financial and environmental, social and corporate governance performance of Rhodes Food Group and Pioneer Foods, and to determine which company is best for investees to invest in. We chose Pioneer Foods and Rhodes Food Group as we were interested in the different long-term ESG and financial performance strategies that each of these dominant businesses focused on. The consumer goods sector also interested us as they ae the providers of some of the food we eat. It is also interesting to see how these companies give back to the community instead of focusing on profits as corporate social responsibility is a big factor in business today.

Corporate Governance:
The Group’s corporate governance are controlled according to a structural and formal system. It involves creating a balance between doing business and those affected by the business, those who could influence the business and those who have interests in the business, as these people could have a positive effect or negative effect on the company. The Group also has to commit to principles that encourage good corporate governance, the group looks to ensure that practices are handled with accountability, integrity, honesty and fairness. 3.2) Rhodes Food Group
Rhodes Food Group is one of South Africa’s leading food producers, that is known for its high quality canned foods and beverages. Rhodes Food group has focused on the long term financial and also the sustainable development of the company towards the environment, to ensure continued and sustainable business. Rhodes group strategy is to be the supplier of choice for the fresh, frozen and long life meal solutions in its selected markets. (Integrated report.

To ensure a safe and unbiased work environment for all staff the group has a number of policies implemented: (Integrated report. 2016)
 Code of business principles and ethics policy;
 Facilitation and extortion payments policy;
 Monitored compliance with the BBBEE codes (Which the group obtained a ranking of level 4)
 Anti-bribery and anti-corruption policy; and whistle-blowing policy
These policies help promote a fair working environment with the group spending R6.9 million on skill development for black workers under BBBEE as well as investing R2.8 million Rand in
Constitution Road Wine Growers (CRWG), which is a primarily black women-owned and run farm. (Integrated report. 2016)

The group is committed to high standards of corporate governance, through the values of responsibility, accountability, fairness and transparency in all its business activities. The company also carefully adheres to the principles of the Kings III and the JSE listing requirements.
