Comparing Act Three Of William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet
Act three opens up to Benvolio and Mercutio strolling through the public square. They casually insult each other and mock the Capulets. All is well until they stumble upon Tybalt. Tybalt isn't in a particularly good mood because he is looking for Romeo so he can get back at him for crashing the Capulet party. Tybalt fires a few insults at Mercutio, and not knowing better Mercurio fires back a few comebacks. As things get heated Benvolio warns them not to fight, but just then Romeo walks in. Romeo doesn't want to get involved in the fighting so Mercurio fights Tybalt. Romeo tries to stop the fight, but Tybalt kills Mercutio. Romeo takes the blame for Mercutio's death so he challenges Tybalt to a duel and kills him. Romeo runs off just before the Prince shows up, who is not happy about the fighting. Benvolio explains what happened, but the Prince decides that Romeo must be banished.

When her nurse enters, Juliet realizes something must have gone wrong. At first, she believes her new husband has been killed, but then she learns that Tybalt was killed. She is quite angry at Romeo but then she remembers that Romeo is her husband and she really can’t curse him. She is in despair when she finds out Romeo has been banished, but her nurse promises to find him so they can say goodbye. Scene three starts with Romeo, who is hiding out with Friar Laurence, learning that he is banished. When there is a knock on the door, Romeo runs to hide, but it is only Juliet’s nurse. The Friar and nurse come up with a plan that Romeo and Juliet can have one night together before he leaves.
