Beowulf and Sir Gawain Essay In the dictionary the definition of a hero is a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. Synonyms used for hero include; idol, model, icon and champion. Heroism is shown in both Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Both characters are show loyalty, nobility and courage in a number of ways.
Beowulf is an epic poem of a said to be “immortal” man, with unbelievable strength. Beowulf is seen as a hero not just for his strength but also his determination and courageousness. In his story he travels to Sweden from his home country of Denmark to help the Geats with a villain who had been terrorizing their homes. The monsters name was Grendel and he was a giant demon like creature that would sneak into people’s homes at night and eat them. When Beowulf was faced by the monster he ripped of his arm and killed him. Later the monsters mother tried to retrieve her sons arm and Beowulf chased after her to be 100% that the Sweden’s were safe. These few actions in Beowulf’s journeys show all the characteristics of a hero by showing he is courageous …show more content…

Sir Gawain is seen as a hero in his story because he also shows bravery.
To start the story, Sir Gawain is the only noble to step forward and play the game the green knight offered. The games rules were that Sir Gawain was to hit the green knight with his sword and in a years’ time he was to look for the green knight and let the knight hit him with his sword. The green knight ended up being magic and survived Sir Gawain’s hit. In an exact year Sir Gawain when out and searched for the green knight and when he found him he followed the rules and let the Green knight hit him. Sir Gawain is a known as a hero in his story because he showed idolism and could be seen as an icon. Sir Gawain was one of tens of other nobles who stood up for his king and took the hit from a
sword.
Both characters hold traits of a great hero; courage, bravery, idolism, etc. Beowulf and Sir Gawain show their heroism in different ways but can clearly be seen as model citizens of their homes. Beowulf shows his heroism with battles of multiple creatures and Sir Gawain shows his heroism with nobility and dedication to his king.
