Comparing Car Radio 'And Acquainted With The Night'
Songs are exactly like poetry, maybe even a little better (Griggs, Does poetry still matter?). The song “Car Radio” by Twenty One Pilots is more poetic and artistic than the poem “Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost because of the use of repetition, rhyme and symbolism. Though there are many differences between the song and the poem, the theme and SOAPSTone elements are similar in a lot of ways. In the song, Tyler is explaining his experience with depression. By him saying “he lost his car radio” , he’s talking about the music that helps him through the rough times. He has lost his outlet and now is left alone with his thoughts. Similarly, the poem is about a lonely guy who is also experiencing depression. He compares it to being “acquainted with the night.” He’s saying that he’s lonely and he’s isolating himself because of the depression. The subject of the song deals with depression mostly because Tyler’s mind is going crazy with bad thoughts. The car radio is stolen and he’s in silence, which silence can bring about sadness and overthinking. In the same way, the poem’s subject is about the same topics, depression, loneliness and isolation. The narrator has never found any comfort in his depression. He is unwilling to express his feelings because he feels as if no one …show more content…

So what happened to make these people write these pieces? Tyler wrote this piece because his car radio was literally stolen in college, so he decided to write about what you feel in silence. He even said himself, “the song documents where you let your mind go when you don’t have a distraction to keep it in its box” (songmeanings.com). Frost wrote his poem because he was a person that dealt with depression. This poem in particular, though, is a lot about isolation and the battle of the depression itself. He doesn’t want to express himself and he thinks no one is waiting for him. His sadness is never

I was able to relate the poem to a difficult decision of whether or not I was going to move across the country for a job offer. When Frost wrote “because it was grassy and wanted wear” I was able to relate to the yearning to want to move to Florida (grassy), but not leave the support of his family behind in Michigan (wanted wear). My fiancée and I had to sort through the mutual acknowledgement of each others concerns, have common understandings, and act with the other persons concerns in mind. Both ideas were individually acceptable and understanding by themselves, however; the path “to where…

Much like poetry, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.” Music and poetry are two platforms in which artists from the beginning of time have chosen to circulate their ideas, feelings, and opinions. Although different in popularity, these mediums are alike in various ways. Nonetheless, not every song you hear on the radio can be properly analyzed using procedures that you would follow to evaluate poetry. A song has to contain certain literary elements essential to poetry, such as the song “From Eden” by Hozier, in order for it to be analyzed. Hozier is recognized for his sentimental lyrics and use of poetic elements to add musicality and rhythm to his music. Through symbolism, repetition, and…

This may come as a surprise to many but poetry and songs are in fact the same. The two I am comparing; “The Sacred” by Stephen Dunn and “ Car Radio” by Twenty-One Pilots have many similarities and differences, literary device wise, that develop the theme in both verses. Each one shows the importance, benefits and dangers of isolation and its ability to change a person for better for worse In both poems, they each bring up sacred places [mostly cars] but through this description, they set up the mood which can be correlated with the theme. In the song, it suggests that it has a mood of anger which can be both heard throughout the music video and can be interpreted through lyrics, but the mood doesn’t stay consistent and eventually changes…

At first I thought that the music was not in tandem with these lyrics at all. The lyrics have such depression in them at first while the music itself is so peppy and upbeat. I could not understand how they worked together. That for me was the site of struggle. Hegemonic norms tell us that songs about death and sadness should be slow and heavy. This song has such energy to it and resists hegemonic norms so that it couldn’t possibly fall into the category of death. I listened to the song a few more times and I realized that the song was not just a sad retelling of a story, but it is a memorial of…

Robert Frost's “Acquainted with the Night” describes a life that is filled with depression caused by isolation. Many believe this could have been written from Frost's own personal experiences, since it is well known that he experienced a very sad life with the losses of many of his close relatives. This would have left him feeling alone and detached, therefore giving him the inspiration for this poem. When examining the title's literal meaning, one can see Frost’s illustration of how he is very familiar with these dark and lonely feelings that seem to come with the night. The night, and these feelings, are nothing new to him. He uses an exceptionally descriptive setting, diverse symbols, and a unique style to develop his poem. In this poem Frost uses many symbols like the rain, the watchman, and the moon to illustrate the speaker’s depression, as…

Frost is an important writer due to the fact that he helped renew popular interest in American poetry by refusing to write with the academic modernist style used at the time, he chose to be different. Frost wrote about nature and rural life in a traditional yet complex way that grabbed the interest of many people. Some of his best works that I particularly like include “The Road Not Taken”, “Home Burial”, and “Fire and Ice”. These poems Frost wrote helped form the conception of Americans as tough, self-sufficient individuals. “Home Burial” was about the overwhelming grief after the death of a child. Frost knew and experienced this first hand due to the loss of quite a few people. “Fire and Ice” considers the apocalyptic end of the world.…

Like James Baldwin said “only an artist can tell and only an artist have told, since we have heard of man, what it is like for anyone that gets this planet, to survive it. What it is like to die, or to have somebody die, what it is like to fear death, what is it like to fear, what it is like to love, what it is like to be glad.” Music expresses the pain, suffering, love and all sorts of emotions that we cannot express but just normal verbal means. Artists talk about the depressing topics that we are afraid to talk about and express our inner emotions for us and give us a sense of relief that someone else can relate to us. In the revelation of the narrator at the end of the story he realized that of all the things he been through that there is still light at the end of the tunnel because he still have his brother, they are surviving and living.…

Some of the specific words and sentences stand out in this song. “Tiffany-twisted,” and “The Mercedes bends,” are two quite funny ones, describing a girl caught up in material thing. Another good word is, “Alibis.” This word is used because it basically is a smart word for excuse. It is saying even though everybody has different excuses for being addicted to “Hotel California,” they are all there for the same reason. The last good word is, “Programmed.” On the surface, this word seems innocent enough, but when really looked at, it is seen that it alludes to everything today is robotically and unfeeling. These words really give the poem depth, enhancing its effects.…

I see the Song of Songs as an allegory. This is supposed to be a poem that is between lovers. A man and a woman are expressing appreciation for each other’s bodies in frank detail. It is intended to celebrate human sexuality, love and human life itself. The lovers repeatedly describe parts of each other’s bodies over and over. They make comparisons to animals or features of landscape. The intention of this is to have the reader gain the power of physical desire while appreciating the harmony of the human body and love.…

Robert Frost wrote many magnificent works of poetry within his lifetime. Two of his poems that were written within seven years of each other, “The Road Not Taken” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, have such remarkable comparisons within each other. Frost plays on many aspects within each, while still keeping consistency of themes such as life, nature, and the emotions of the narrator and how they affect their lives and choices. With the undertone of life being a key component, one speaks of a choice to make and how it can affect the life from that moment forward, the other hints at a life lived and reflection.…
