Isabel, the main character in Chains is quite amazing, and Malak, the main character from A Stone in My Hand is also quite extraordinary. They both are not only great examples of the humankind and what amazing people there are in the world, but they are both also astonishing people. Isabel and Malak are both victimized yet they both share the trait of being courageous which they used to overcome their hardships.

The terrorism going on her city causes her to see unbelievable, horrible things. The main climax is when her brother, Hamid throws stones at the soldiers and gets severely injured. He gets put in the hospital, and the book ends with Malak remembering the strength that they have all kept throughout the challenges that were given to them. Malak has been oppressed and victimized to a level that none of us should ever have to go through before which is shown with the heart wrenching quote of “All through the day, whenever the sadness comes, I pinch my arm to make the sadness go there.”(pg.63) However she still manages to stand up when her family is in danger and she cares for them, “I leap the final step and run toward Hamid”(157).
