Isabel went through being a slave. Isabel is a girl who was very happy living in Rhode Island before she and her sister were sold to be a slave for Mr and Mrs Lockton and went to New York. Isabel wants to try to free herself and her sister from the Lockton couple and tries to get help from her friend curzon.
This novel teaches us about slavery, including how slaves got treated like animals ,can not have their own identity and they're not allowed to have an education. This is Isabel's “story” how slaves were treated and what she went through.
Slaves are treated like an object or like animals. Barely slaves are treated like humans at all. Throughout
the novel we see that Isabel has no choice on what to do. She is thrown around and can not stop it. Isabel says in the book that “A body does not like being bought and sold just like a basket of eggs”. Isabel is talking about how herself, her sister ruth and every other slave is bought and sold and can not stop it. Ruth (Isabel's sister) gets sold and bought again to a different family. While Isabel tries to find ruth, she is feed with little food and water and has a big list of chores to do.
Next, slaves are not allowed to have and eduction. Isabel has already learned how to read and she loves to so in the book isabel went to read when she was a slave and a character named robert said that “slaves don't read” “they can’t.” The reason way they don’t want slaves to read is so if they see letter or a book that talks about where there are going next or how to get free they would obviously want to leave but if they can’t read then they can't easily find a way to escape.
Third, slaves don’t have there own self identity. Most get there name changed to what the owner would prefer. The slaves have to like what the owner wants them to like for Example if the slave likes chocolate and the owner does not want them to like chocolate then the owner can’t to stop them from liking it but they can stop them from eating it.
