The most obvious difference between Les Sylphides and Dialogue was the style of ballet. Dialogue was a contemporary ballet and Les sylphine was completely classical. Both dances required excellent technique; however the focus of each piece was different. Les Sylphides created an environment of peace, with choreography that moved viewer to enjoy the delicacy of ballet. Each dancer possessed immense control which was evident in the unity of the movement. The soft and slow movements of the corps was key in making the ballet “classical”. Music also had an influence on how each performance was executed. The softs song in Les Sylphides like reflect as well as dictate the movements of the corp and soloist. This is also true in dialogue. The big leaps and turns went right with the large dynamic music that was chosen for the piece.
Comparing La Sylph to Les Sylphide
Although they are similar in name, La Sylphide and Les Sylphides are very different. Created in two different centuries, by two different men, and yet their induvial uniqueness gave them popularity. La Sylphide was created by Filippo Taglioni in 1832. This was during the Romanic era when elegance was desired. The ballet was a story of a young Scotsman (James) who is arranged to get married to a young bride. However he is in love affair with a Sylph and she too, does not want him to get married. With the time for James to be wedded drew near, the Sylph playfully fled to the woods, and James unconsciously ran after her.
