Comparing Disney's Sleeping Beauty And Little Briar Rose
The Sleeping Beauty story is one that has been retold and remade constantly throughout world history. From German beginnings of “Little Briar Rose”, to Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, each version has followed the guidelines: a beautiful young lady is trapped in eternal sleep, a prince who wakes her with a kiss, and a happily ever after in the castle. These go on without the acknowledgement of the Prince’s ogress mother or the cannibalistic tendencies of a jealous wife or queen. However, in today’s society many people have brought on the idea that perhaps Sleeping Beauty did not want to be woken up. He does not seem to acknowledge them but imagines his pure child back home. We see him presenting her with a gift then later eating dinner with her mother at the kitchen table. There is also a photograph of his family in his id wallet. Overall this promotes a positive image of his family. Though while the audience is distracted by Miguel’s plunder into the trap, we fail to notice Heintz’s minor panic attack when the dolls fall to the ground. It is most evident when Eva dangles the image of his daughter do we realize he has been in denial throughout the whole film. What was mistaken as him thinking Emily was truly in the ship with them was his refusing to believe she had truly died. When he finally accepts this fact, he defeats Eva and escapes the scene. Thus, the sleeping beauty has woken from her dream. While it is true the sleeping beauties in Otomo’s film are not conventional, they do have their own original ways of presenting the story. The important part of storytelling is to captivate and entertain the audience. In this case, Otomo created a suspenseful plot between Eva’s haunting spirit and Heintz traumatic past which leaves the viewers at a loss for words. He has created his own successful Sleeping
