“Doubt” there is a character named Sister Alyousis that is experiencing a situation where she questions what she believes is true or false. What this character question is that a man is having an inappropriate relationship with a student. To summarize the story, Sister Alyousis is primarily her fighting against diversity, evidence, and society. The life lesson that this story teach is that not everybody is on your side, and you should not give in to peer pressure. Based on this lesson the student will learn to trust himself instead of giving up to somebody else’s belief so easily. Some people lack mental will, so they role model to somebody who has strong mental will like Sister James did to Sister Alyousis in the play. In order to improve you a person must have someone to look up too. Too often young students believe giving up is always a possible answer to the question that they are having, when it should not be. When in reality it is the worst possible answer in life. Second, In the short poem “Richard Cory” the author Edwin Robinson conveys the theme of not judging a book by its cover. The story is about a man named Richard Cory who is extremely rich that once you see him you would want to be him. In general, Richard Cory is symbolized in the poem as the stereotypical rich man that seems to have everything that everybody wants (money). Ironically, to end the story the author Edwin Robinson has Mr. Cory hangs himself because of depression. What one can gather from this story ending is the idea that money may seem like everything, but in the real world money is actually a worthless piece a paper. This idea would apply to students in college that hate their degree class, such as agriculture, nursing, and engineering. A person should not pick a degree in something that they are not interested in because it is the highest paying job to obtain. For instance, if you are not mentally stable to handle the sight of the organs of the human body, then you should not be a surgeon. You should be somewhere else happier doing what you love. In another example, if you love to build but hate math be a construction worker. Yes, construction workers get paid less, but you would be happier in the spot you are in now. A person should not spend their lives gathering money that they do not need just because they think money is everything. Third “The Grave” is a story of a young girl who likes to hunt with her brother.
In this case of the story, the girl is portrayed as a tom boy (a girl that act like a boy). In the middle of one hunting day this women child kills a rabbit. Not knowing that the rabbit that she killed was pregnant she felt bad and never hunted again. At the end of the story the child is now a grown woman at a market place that soon panic when she realizes what she has done in the past was extremely cruel and can be done to her. The lesson is towards High School students that believe that they have all the time in the world to make mistakes. It is normal to make mistakes, but it is best that you try your best to fix it, or prevent it from happening again. For example, a student that did not study for his test fails that test. It is normal to fail, but you should learn to study for your test, and not keep doing what you did to fail the
test. To conclude, a reader looking for a story about character development towards the better they would read literature such as “Doubt”, “Richard Cory”, and Antigone to better themselves. There is always room for somebody to improve their thinking process in life because you can only make a few mistakes until it comes back and haunts you. Life lessons can be learned through experience and literature. In my opinion it is best to learn it through literature so you would not have to experience it for yourself. Because the character in the literature that you read could have done something differently that you did not think of. Too often people decide to give up fixing their mistakes which are often shown in students towards the idea of school, so they need a reason to stay. Reading a story about how a woman overcame peer pressure to stop an act of evil can influence persistence. The suicide of a rich man has the reader question what is more important money or the people you love the most. The realization of a women’s past mistake influences the thought of I should be careful on what I do now because I could regret it one day. These thoughts are often aimed toward students or adults in life situation that they do not understand.
