Louise, “whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of the blue sky,” began to paint a vivid picture of the outside to represent her dull life becoming more clear. (Chopin, 148) Chopin uses the settings outside the window to emphasize on the happiness that the character starts to feel. Although her husband died, her character finds her independence thinking about the rest of her life, and her heart condition seems to be a minor detail in the story
LeBlanc 2 line. Chopin uses the words “free” during the story to demonstrate the characters new life, and how she will be happier in the future. Along with the words free being repeated, Chopin describes Louise demonstrating expressions towards this feeling by “open(ing) and spread(ing) her arms out to them in welcome.” (148)
The end of the story reveals that Louise’s husband is still alive, and that her fragile heart could not take the loss of her new found independence. Her joy was overpowering, that when it was taken back from her, her character died. Her death was deemed because of her heart condition, however her fragile heart was used to show that she had died from a broken heart. The same broken heart that made her fragile from the beginning. The ending is ironic because she finally got what she was longing for, happiness, however once she had it and she became happy it was taken away from
