confusing and all over the place he seems to love her and he is not the cause of her death.
Everyone else putting their input into the relationship and trying to change Ophelia's mind.
As Laertes said, (1.3.6-11) “ For Hamlet and the trifling of his favours,
Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood,
A violet in the youth of primy nature,
Forward, not permanent, sweet, not lasting,
The perfume and suppliance of a minute.
No more.”
Ophelia’s brother, Laertes, is telling Ophelia to ignore Hamlet and to not talk to him. He told her that he might love her now but when he becomes King he will not love her. (1.3.13-47), “ Think it no more….Youth to itself rebels, though none else near.”
Ophelia’s father, Polonius, also tells her to stay away from Hamlet,(1.3.121-141)
“Ay, springes to catch woodcocks!I do know,....
Look to’t, I charge you. Come your ways.”
Ophelia’s father and brother were trying to get her to stay away from Hamlet, it can be considered foreshadowing for in the future of the play. Ophelia is still trying to have hope that Hamlet still loves her.
When Hamlet goes crazy, he seems to not love Ophelia like she said he did. He tells her to go to a nunnery, because she shouldn’t create sinners for the rest of the world, (3.1. 130-138)
“Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be a breeder of
sins?....
We are arrant knaves all; believe none of us. Go thy ways to a nunnery. Where’s your father?”
Hamlet also says that Ophelia is acting like two different people she says she is one person, but he thinks she is acting like a completely different person. (3.1.150-157)
“ I have heard of you paintings well enough.
God hath given you one face and you make yourselves another….
To a nunnery, go.”
Hamlet also had went to Ophelia’s room and was acting crazy, she was not sure why he was doing what he was.(2.1.98-110)
“He took me by the wrist and held me hard….
And to the last bended their light on me.”
Which if Hamlet loved Ophelia he wouldn’t have scared her like he did. Hamlet acting like a madman and scaring Ophelia. But Hamlet really loves Ophelia. He is just trying to push her away because he does not want her near him while he’s going through this part in his life, but he still loves her.
When Ophelia kills herself Hamlet is a mess. Hamlet was shocked when he found out that he was witnessing them dig Ophelia’s grave. (5.1.230)
“What, the fair Ophelia!”
Hamlet getting this upset clearly does not give evidence that he is responsible for her death. If he intentionally and purposely wanted Ophelia to die he wouldn’t be this shocked and upset. Hamlet says that he loved her, and no one can equal the amount of love that he has for Ophelia.(5.1.262-264)
“I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers
Control not with all their quantity of love
Make up my sum. What wilt thou do for her?
Hamlet is showing love and care for Ophelia, clearly was not responsible for her death. Hamlet loved her.
Throughout this play Hamlet and Ophelia’s relationship was very up and down. Hamlet just didn’t know what to do when his father had died and his mom had moved on so quickly. He loved Ophelia so much and wouldn’t do anything to harm her. There was so much death and lies in Hamlet’s life, but his love for Ophelia was not a lie. He loved her more than anything. Hamlet was not the cause of Ophelia’s death, he did kill her father which made her go crazy. He did not kill him on purpose, and he regretted it and felt horrible. Even though Hamlet and Ophelia’s relationship was very confusing and all over the place he seems to love her and he is not the cause of her death.
