The fighting and betrayal that transpired while the boys were on the island was known to be discouraged in the 1950’s. Although the societies are taken place during different time periods, betrayal and cowardness was considered shameful. While both stories include betrayal, they also incorporate someone who helps the troubled leader. The Lord of the Flies integrates the character Piggy into the story by having him assist Ralph when he is troubled. Even though Piggy isn’t the most attractive or healthy kid, he is intelligent, and that knowledge helped Ralph tremendously throughout the book, “‘I got the conch.
