Love: The Most Powerful Force
Are there a lot of people in this world that would take life-risking actions for the person they love the most? A survey taken in May of 2013 showed that 55% of voters would die for their loved one (TellWut). In The English Patient and In The Skin of a Lion both written by Michael Ondaatje, characters are motivated by love to take extreme actions that end in lifelong happiness for some, but not so for others.

Also, when Clara says she is more interested in Ambrose and leaves Patrick, Patrick does not give up and continues to go for her. In addition to this, when Katherine dies, Almasy does not fall in love with another woman, he enters a depression because “Everything I have loved or valued has been taken away from me” (Patient 248). In the end, Patrick receives lifelong happiness whereas Almasy does not.
Love is a powerful entity and in the words of Almasy, “the heart is an organ of fire” (Patient 95). Patrick Lewis and The English Patient, Almasy, are two characters written by Michael Ondaatje that portray

Each one of these short stories is written by two different authors and sees ‘love’ at different angles. The character Jake in Love in L.A. has this vision of love that is more of a mockery. Then, Terri’s ex-husband in What We talk about When We Talk about Love has so much passion, but the kind of passion that can be interoperated as obsession. The lies and misconceptions of ‘love’ that Jake and Terri’s ex-husband display reveal that ‘love’ does not exist in a world filled with nothing but cruelty and evil actions.…

James Maloney’s novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove is beautifully crafted and achingly honest exploration of the transformative power of love. Maloney uses language techniques, such as imagery, characterisation, symbolism, themes and figurative language. This entices the reader into, positions them to feel and think ways about the characters and is given to inform the reader about the character. In ABTWC Maloney has used unconditional love to express the characters inner thoughts. He uses this to meticulously craft abstruse themes and characterisations. The Ways he has shown how transformative love is through points mentioned before and through the different forms of love (conditional and unconditional). I will present ways…

In James Joyce's “Araby” and John Updike's “A & P” show different ways that the protagonists are affected but these acts are unrecognized by the recipients of their love. This creates a bond to the fact that illnesses start to cause people to lose hope in finding a solution and everything starts to become unpredictable. Through personification, weaknesses, and perseverance, this play takes a deep turn and mysteriously relates to diseases in a creative and unique…

When people think of love, they often think of the passion and happiness that two people can share. William Shakespeare's Twelfth night and David Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly are both plays that challenge heteronormative expectations and force the readers to abstain from believing that love is only correct amongst the male and female gender. In Fact, through the characters actions we witness that once someone is in love, it blinds them from their reality forcing them to neglect clear signs of “unusual/queer” behavior. Both plays share a homologous theme that: love makes people crazy and makes them do crazy things.…

Love at first sight is one of the many myths of all time, especially during the time of Romeo and Juliet. According to Elliot D. Cohen, from Psychology Today, he states “The idea of love at first sight appears to be somewhat of a misnomer since it cannot reasonably be taken literally. This is because merely seeing someone does not afford a sufficient window into the nature of the person seen.” In other words, looking at someone does not do justice, whereas getting to know someone does. There is no emotional attachment but mostly physical attraction when one meets another. When first seeing a person, it is very unlikely to have a feeling of love right off the bat, without any knowledge of their character. It is not the feeling of love for the person, but simply being infatuated with their looks or beauty. In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo was under the impression that when…

One of the great questions surrounding social psychologists and everyday people by extension is whether or two individuals can fall in love at first sight. This would imply that the non-verbal communication between the two in that moment was as strong and passionate enough to constitute love before having gotten to even speak to the other. To fall in love is to have strong feelings of passion and attachment to another individual. Measuring what constitutes full love is unclear and debatable within circles, but generally agreed to be a very strong feeling that is created. Love at first sight can be described as a signal of the strongly grounded love that may be to come, but ultimately exists as a very strong first impression that cannot be predetermined to sustain itself as genuine love.…
