1st period The Mind of Madness
Is someone mad merely because they are different, and do they in return see the same about the world as society do? Madness occurs in the mind of individual that have experienced an event or a series of events that their mind simply cannot handle and to avoid the harsh reality, they fall into the state of madness. In the story The Great Gatsby, “A Rose for Emily” and The Crucible the author portrays through a series of events recognizing the choices that individual has to make to obtain madness.
Sometimes ideals can become such a big driving force in our life that they cause us to overlook the truth and ignore reality, reality
and ideals are contrasted through madness of the characters in The Great Gatsby. Through contrasting ideals and the reality of a situation, F.Scott Fitzgerald suggests that love is an ideal that allow individual to not realizing the truth. Gatsby has this ideal that he can repeat the past, “Daisy love me when she married me and she loves me now. Sometime she gets foolish ideas in her head and she doesn’t know what she doing”(Fitzgerald 138) He wanted to revive the love they had many years ago, to attain his dream rather than facing the reality that Daisy did not love him back. He in love with the ideals of being with her, Gatsby’s ideal of repeating the past is very unrealistic but he does not see that in the madness of achieving his love. Daisy is married to Tom which is a fact that Gatsby cannot change, instead he decide to show his love for her. “She have never seen Gatsby, that she was completely happy with her husband, she convinced herself of it and cried in her handkerchief” (Fitzgerald 172) Gatsby end up getting hurt and have no one left. Daisy has already left the past behind her. Gatsby does not see that he can’t change the way Daisy feel about him, it not possible because it is not in his hand to control the future. Fitzgerald use of past and future to paint the picture of madness that caused by the love Gatsby has for Daisy, this show that love can sometime change the mind of a person that caused madness.
Can madness cause just by the way society view of certain things? Very few people scared to show the world who they really are and how they really feel. For example “A Rose for Emily”, Miss Emily is perceived as being a gentlewoman and strange at the same time lives for many years as a recluse, someone who has withdrawn from a community to live in seclusion. "No visitor had passed since she ceased giving china-painting lessons eight or ten years earlier" (
