Pollard did this because he wanted to be his own man. Pleasure could come from the less organized and irrational things in life as well as the organized and rational. An example of this is when Chase turns down the offer the boat owners gave him. The significance of this example is very important because this turns Pollards viewpoint around. The emphasis was on the “hero”, the individual who is willing to stand alone and will die for a cause he believes in. An example of this in the film is when Chase turns down the offer the boat owners gave him even though everyone was against him. Another example is when Chase leaves his family to hunt whales and earn money all the while risking his life. Romanticism promoted anti-rationalism and rebellion against strict forms and the emphasis placed on reason during the Enlightenment. This can be spotted twice in the film. Once when Pollard tells Chase to throw the spear at the whale. The second time is when the boat owners demand Chase and Pollard to lie about what happened to their ship.
