Comparing Sophocles Antigone And If We Must Die
Publilius Syrus once said,(12c) “Man’s life is short; and therefore an honorable death is his immortality,(12c)” that is also the main idea in the play Antigone by Sophocles. After studying “If we must Die” by Jamaican author Claude McKay and “Invictus”by William Ernest Henley then comparing them to Antigone,(12c) it is effortless to decide which one is more related. “If we must Die” is more similar to Antigone seeing that they share the same views of dying an honorable death and making something of life and not just wasting it.
Antigone and “If we must Die” are similar,(12a) for they both have the main idea of dying an honorable death. In “If we must Die” McKay *relates wimpy pigs getting pressed against a wall and killed to everyday people,(12a) and teaches that we should be dying in a way to get people to honor us. Antigone also talks about honorful deaths especially when Antigone is trying to persuade Ismene into burying their brother. Antigone said that if they died in the process then it would be an honorable

“If we must Die” is all about not wasting life especially the last stanza which says,(12c) “Like men we’ll face the murderous,(12c) cowardly pack,(12c) Pressed to the wall,(12c) dying,(12a) but fighting back!” *That says it all, don’t run away from Death,(12a) but instead live life perfectly no matter what. That was also Antigone's mindset,(12d) why would I not bury my brother just so I get to live longer. Antigone probably could not of lived with herself knowing that she left her brother to eternally die just because her death was in the picture. People may say that “Invictus” has that same idea,(12a) but “Invictus” focuses more on never giving up as opposed to not wasting life. Knowing all that makes it impossible to even think that “Invictus” can be more closely related to Antigone the “If we must Die

Yes, I do agree that Antigone went against Creon and the law but I don’t think that she should die because of what she believes is right. If you really think about it, burying her brother isn’t actually a crime. That would be like punishing people for praying while they are out at dinner. It is their beliefs so they have the right to do what they…

Creon’s pride and Antigone’s stubbornness create Antigone’s central conflict and create devastating consequences. Antigone loses her life, prompting Creon’s son and wife to commit suicide. Creon is forced to live with the guilt of the deaths of those dearest to him knowing that they were a result of his selfish actions. These events could not have turned out any differently due to how deeply engrained Creon and Antigone’s flaws are. Antigone is so determined to bury her brother that a potential death sentence and words from her sister do not deter her. The motivation of doing what the gods want, honoring Polyneices, and her stubbornness cause her to be unafraid of punishment. This is illustrated when Antigone says, “This death of mine/Is of…

Although it is tragic that Antigone died for her brother's sake, it is predictable and rather painless in the end for her. Creon, on the other hand, has to keep living with the grief that he was the reason for the deaths in his family as well as the hatred that the common people will have for him. The amount of time Creon will have to live with this grief is unknown and that pain is far worse than anything Antigone had to deal with.…

The Burial at Thebes: A Version of Sophocles’ Antigone translated by Seamus Heaney, is still read and reacted today to remind us on the importance of democracy in society and to connect with the readers/watchers to emphasize the negative impact of hubris. Creon is the tragic hero of Antigone because although he starts from a position of greatness, his tragic flaw leads him to a catastrophe; he realizes the error of his ways, it is too late to prevent the catastrophe; and his downfall and suffering leave him both humbled and…

First of all, Antigone says to Creon “But if I’d allowed my own mother’s dead son to just lie there, an unburied corpse, then I’d feel distress.” (227-229). This quote shows how Antigone is doing the right thing by burying her brother and what Creon is doing to her brother Polyneices an act of injustice. This also shows how Antigone and Creon are different because she is being driven by the love she has towards Polyneices and Creon is being driven by the hate he has towards him. Second, Antigone says to Creon “But where could I gain greater glory than setting my own brother in his grave?” (570-571). This quote shows how Antigone is willing to disobey the law to give her brother a proper burial because of how much she loves him. Many people throughout history have perished or suffered for their beliefs or their religion. The story of, Antigone, includes many examples of martyrs and the ways they suffer for their beliefs. Although they do not have the same actions, Creon and Antigone share the same motive of restoring respect to their despised, incestual family through different ways. Some examples are such as how Antigone tries through gaining honor as the last great leader of her kin and how Creon attempts by using power as the ruler of Thebes. Through these two characters, Sophocles, one of the three ancient Greek tragedians, tries to convey the idea to the reader that no matter the circumstances, remain loyal to the gods.…

At first, Antigone reacts in denial: “It isn’t true!” she pleads, but eventually she appears to be defeated, answering his questions with a short, dejected, “Yes”. At this moment in the play, it would seem that Creon has triumphed, proving to Antigone that she has no reason to die for such a pointless, unfounded cause. However, he makes the mistake of saying “life is probably nothing other than happiness”. This reignites Antigone’s determination, which is a crucial element as it cements the idea that she is not dying for religious reasons, or even to uphold a moral principle, but because of her hatred for Creon’s vision of happiness.…

Antigone’s dedication to her family is evident in the beginning of the tragedy, in her discourse with Ismene: “At least he is my brother…I will not prove false to him…I myself will bury him. I will be good to die, so doing. I shall lie by his side, loving him as he loved me; I shall be a criminal-but religious one” she ends,” The time in which I must please those that are dead is longer than I must please those of this world”(Antigone, lines 50,80). Death is a recurring subject in the Iliad along with graphic descriptions. Every man knows he will die at some point especially when going into battle. For example, Sarpedon says to Glaucus, “Ah cousin, if only we could quit this war and count on living without age or death, I would not head for the front ranks myself nor would I urge you to do battle there, but we are mortal and death’s faces stalk us in numbers such that no man can escape. So let us go, and take glory or give!”…
