Theodore Roosevelt became president after President William McKinley was shot twice on September 14, 1901. He was the first of three presidents heavily referred to as the progressive presidents. The next president was President William H. Taft, who spent 4 years in office directly after Roosevelt and had many great achievements during his presidency. Lastly, President Woodrow Wilson elected in 1912 over Roosevelt and Taft. These three presidents heavily changed American government in the early 20th century. His election was a solid victory over William Jennings Bryan with 321 electoral votes to Bryan’s 162. His presidency was based on being judicially minded, limiting all of his powers on the legal system. His views on being a progressive president were very stern though helping support the progressive movements American was pressing for. Taft was very practical and determined and through his administration he helped promote over 90 anti-trusts, helped strengthen regulations of interstate commerce on railroads through congress, helped the department of labor become established, helped shape and conform child labor laws, fought for an 8 hour work day for all contractors working for the U.S. government, and began work toward creating the first federal income
