North Virginia had a huge victory over the Union’s Army of the Potomac at Chancellorsville Virginia. Lee chose to attack and overrun the union for a second time ( The first time had ended at the battle of Antietam the previous fall). Lee hoped to obtain remembrance of the Confederacy by Britain and France and build up the cause of northern “Copperheads” who favored peace. Lee's second invasion of the North had failed, and had resulted in a lot casualties on both union and confederate sides. An estimated 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured, or missing in this battle. The siege of VIcksburg took place in Mississippi from May 18 to July 4 1863. Major General Ulysses S. Grant’s Tennessee army met on the mississippi river in Vicksburg. Grant set up a 6 week campaign. His campaign started in early June. General John Pemberton’s army set up camp along a 7 mile circle surrounding the city in mid-May. Grant's army outnumbered Pemberton's army when surrounding them. On May 19th and 22nd, Grant's army sent off two big assaults. Due to this, Grant’s army had major casualties. Lieutenant General John Pemberton surrendered on July 4th 1863.
