Comparing The Beautiful Girl And Olympia
Between the two works of art chosen, The Beautiful Girl by Hannah Höch and Olympia by Èduard Manet, the major key difference would be the form by which the two pieces are presented. The Beautiful Girl is more abstract and leaves more to the imagination, while Olympia is well laid out and more self-explanatory to the audience. While the audience might not know the meaning behind a piece of art, the artist who created it has in some way shown their meaning to the world. Whether it is through the picture as a whole or through the little details that lie within the piece, the artist expects the viewers to be able to interpret their art in some way. As odd as that may sound, a lot of artists create art to portray an issue in a society of a certain time period or era. For example, in the Beautiful Girl piece, there is a bunch of objects put into one, but it is what the objects are that make a difference. The fact the artist includes car emblems with female aspects can relate to the idea that cars are considered a manly thing and are not at all associated with women of that time period. This creates the idea that women were seen as less manly than men in that time. It shows a woman with a lightbulb as a head, that could represent the idea that women were not presented as equals to men when they possessed the same intelligence if not more. For the Olympia piece, a white woman is presented regally while a black woman is standing behind her. The black woman seems to be serving to the white woman. That could present a time period of when there was a controversy between blacks and whites in ownership and equality. Both pieces do not seem like they have anything to do with anything but being art pieces, but they actually relate to some of the problems that the world experienced at a certain point in time.
