The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessing both have great, but difficult and exhausting themes. The theme of The Count of Monte Cristo is to be hopeful. The theme of Blessing is that changes can be a blessing. Themes are easy for people to find, but not easy to follow and do. They can seem impossible to do, but they can change the way you are and how you see certain situations. Themes take time to become a habit. The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessing’s themes are critical to learn in own lifetime.
The Count of Monte Cristo’s theme of being hopeful is important for Edmond to learn. At the beginning of the story, Edmond does not have any hope and he has stopped eating the prison food. However, “Edmond heard a hollow sound in the wall…” (par. 1) and this caused Edmond to have some hope and dream of “Liberty!” (par.3). Edmond wanted to escape and help the prisoner, if it was a prisoner, so he “raised himself up and began to talk about everything.” (par. 8) to distract the guard from hearing the noise. In addition, Edmond does a test to identify who is making the sound and finds out “It is some prisoner who is striving to obtain his freedom...”(par. 10). In the play, changes happen all over. Rene and many people had to move from San Raphael (line 38-39). Furthermore, Jesse had to sell his cabin and his uncle has to live with him. “Do you wish he’d go away? That it could be all yours again?” (line 36). Because of these changes, Jesse becomes “off beat…” (line 40) . However, in the play, he does receive one incredible change, Rene. Jesse and Rene become great friends.
