Loss Of Hope In Homer's Odyssey

Amidst all the countless struggles, problems and circumstances we faced throughout our journey, still, here we are fighting!, finding our own ways just to survive and even risking our lives and reputation just to say ‘let’s move forward and continue the race of life’….it is because we have this HOPE, hope which we hold that gives strength to us to stand still. But what if, the hope we hold has gone and it seems we are forgotten by our hope for almost a day, a month, and or a year? Would you still hold and believe in your trusted hope? It is, ‘we should not expect something for nothing but we all do, and we call it hope.’ (Ed Howe) Odysseus and Penelope leave an example on how they ended up a happy ending though it seems not to be a happy one.
Odysseus went to war away from her wife Penelope, and in Trojan wars’ case there is no chance to come back home alive. Optimistically, Penelope has strong faith that sooner she will still hold his husband’s hand back. On the other hand, Odysseus was also very confident to himself that he could still come back to his kingdom as soon as he won the war. Unfortunately, as the old saying says, there’s always a dark side in every victory’, lots of trials hinders Odysseus to his immediate come back. It took him 10 years searching his way home, he lost his comrades and he almost dies in the sea but his perseverance never weakens, because he has a hope as what also his wife has. The same as Penelope, she had hard times either, most of her fellow pushing her to believe that his husband was already gone. But they do both wait and has strong faith to see each other again…. Victoriously, at last Odysseus reach his home, sweet home. Truly there’s a reward to those who wait and believe in the spirit of hope. More than that, we hold hopes but not to rely only to the hope itself but to the one who makes impossible hopes to possible and it is God. Hope requires faith in God for ‘hope is the parent of faith’ (Cyrus A. Bartol).
